September 1917

In early September the men march 6 hours from Houvelin to Fosse 10 a mining pit near Cite St Pierre. On the 5th they are back on the front line in various trenches in the St Laurent sector. They face more gas shelling, but no one is hurt. But on the 7th the Germans shell the path around headquarter hitting rationing parties. Three men are killed and 12 wounded. On the 10th and 11th the enemy is shelling aggressively and launching trench mortars into the Battalion’s trenches. Surprisingly there are no casualties. The men are relieved and move back to their billets in the mining pits of Fosse 10. After the usual down time the men are back on the front lines on the 18th. The situation is quiet. And surprisingly the men are only there for a couple of days when they are relieved by British troops. The heavy action appears to be happening further north. Maybe the 1st Battalion is needed there? Yes the men take a 4 hour March to their billets in Bruay. Here they get some down time. There are sporting events on the 24th thru the 27th. The 1st Battalion plays a game of baseball against the 3rd battalion. The 3rd Battalion wins. After church services on the 30th the men take turns practicing their shooting at the Rifle Range. Yes it is obvious they are resting up again and training for something big, again.
