October 1917

Private Dixon’s battalion does a couple of turns at the front in October but the situation is, as they say “Quiet” While away from the front it is the usual activities . The men on these days behind the lines do get to attend “Divine” services each Sunday. There are two services, one for the Anglicans and one for the Roman Catholics. At times, if they are stationed near a French Village or town, the Roman Catholics attend a local church service. The men continue to practice their shooting on the ranges. There are a couple of bathing parades this month. Why is that? The men are getting fitted for new boots! And then they are getting new clothing – winter clothing! And there is another baseball game against the 3rd battalion, and what do you know – the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion finally wins one – even Major Adams seems surprised. On the 20th and 21st the men do some long marches to the north. They end the month in Oxelaere. They are getting closer to Ypres, Belgium. They start doing some training on a model of Passchendaele. Hello Belgium – the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion to the rescue.
